The Outboard Expert: Frisky New 40s from Honda and Yamaha

New models raise the bar in the 40-hp outboard engine class.
The news focus this month is on compact motors, as both Yamaha and Honda held media introductions for new motors in this range. These motors see a variety of applications, from pontoon boats to aluminum bass and walleye-style rigs, on flats skiffs in the Gulf and Keys, and in Europe on inflatable boats. According to Honda, the 45/50 market accounts for about 12 percent of the total US motor sales, with 69 percent of those motors used for fishing and 67 percent used in fresh water only.
